Am I right to assume that even by human terms "cousin" doesn't necessarily designate closeness to begin with? Of the ones here only three are my true siblings.

Restricting yourself to only your "true family" may seem logical, but it shouldn't prevent you from seeking the help of others who care. As much as you separate yourself from your cousin's it is an idea they understand...though take a bit too far at times.
